We’re not generally open for staff member applications. However, we also feel it’s a bad idea to completely close our eyes and ears to the public concerning this matter. If you feel you have something that you can offer to our network, please tell us that. Read through your e-mail before sending it and ask yourself one question: ‘would I be interested in this person based on this letter?’

We’re also keeping our eyes and ears open for new server applications. Please read closely through this section before sending an application. If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to ask first.

First, some requirements for new servers

• B²IRC requires a Unix/Linux compatible operating system as a base for all servers. The B²IRC server administrator must also be an administrator of the server computer in question
• All B²IRC servers require a stable Internet uplink which is available 24 hours a day - cable modems, home DSL, WLAN and similar unreliable technologies are not options
• Dedicated server machines are preferred, however the greatest emphasis is on available resources - you should have enough memory and CPU time to spare for the IRC server process
• All servers must be able to hold at least 500 clients
• Servers should be available on a long term - not as temporary solutions
• The server administrator must be active and interested in network operations, and should have enough past experience with IRC
• The server administrator should have some personal interest in our purpose - that is, Japanese popular culture and related subjects

Sending the application

We have chosen not to have a prewritten application at this time. We feel such a form would kill some of the purpose, as we wish to see your own words. Please include complete traceroute information to our servers at tampere.fi.b2irc.net and rvn.fi.b2irc.net. Then include all the details of your server hardware and software. Don’t worry; the information will be handled confidentially. And last but not least - tell us about yourself, your interests in this network, our purpose and our ideas. Feel free to note if you think we’re not doing too well in some areas, we’re expecting all staff members to be capable of creative criticism.

It’s obvious that laying out all the rules for staff member and server applications is impossible, in the end we must resort to common sense above all else. Try to look at your applications from our point of view and feel free to ask in advance.

In the end, perhaps the most important requirement is an open mind.
